Evidence Collection (Portfolio) Approach

The Alternate ACCESS for ELLs evidence collection-based approach involves teacher ratings of a student’s ELP across multiple content areas (Social and Instructional Language, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) and language domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing). It is flexible in the way it allows teachers to select appropriate sources of evidence for their ratings.

The Alternate ACCESS for ELLs evidence collection-based approach allows teachers to use existing evidence (e.g., work samples, prior observations, prior assessments) to rate students’ performance on items. Each item includes specific examples of the type of student performances required to achieve each rating level. Teachers also provide ratings regarding the level of support required for the student to perform a particular task, the frequency with which the student is able to perform the task, the quality of the evidence used as the basis for the proficiency level rating, and the student’s retention of ELP skills.
